Canine Good Citizen Test
If your dog is a well-behaved companion, why not brag about it with a certificate, ribbon, and official title with the American Kennel Club? The Canine Good Citizen test is done by AKC-approved evaluators all across the country. In this test, your dog must prove that he is a good citizen. There are different versions of this, including “urban” and “farm dog” titles. The most common version requires that your dog complete ten skills that the AKC recognizes as the basis for being a good citizen. In order to pass, your dog must: allow a stranger to approach his owner and shake hands; sit politely while being pet by the evaluator; accept a light grooming, ear exam, and foot exam; walk loosely on a leash for a right turn, left turn, about turn, and stop; demonstrate sit, down, and stay; come when called; show little reaction to another dog; show little reaction when presented with distractions; and remain calm when held by the evaluator while the owner leaves the room for three minutes. If your dog can do these things, the AKC will issue you a certificate, ribbon, and your dog adds the title “CGC” to the end of his name. Our head trainer, Ashley, is certified to give these tests.
