For many people, road trips are not complete without the family dog. It’s fun for the whole family to go hiking, especially when the dog can join in, too. However, traveling can often be stressful with a canine companion. Do you let them sit with the kids in the backseat? Should they also have seatbelts? A road trip can be difficult if your pet is excitable, destructive, or inexplicably escapable. A scene from Marley & Me with a yellow Lab hanging halfway out of the car window comes to mind. Excited dogs can jump around, distracting you and creating more blind spots. Destructive dogs might eat the seatbelts or even go straight for the seat itself. Dogs that simply have better places to be than the car might be willing to try that rolled-down window. Luckily, there is a simple solution to all of these issues. Crating your dog while driving is one of the few one-stop fixes to an issue with your pup. If your dog is crate-trained at home, transitioning to a vehicle crate shouldn’t be too much trouble. The crate in the car will have a similar effect on your dog to the one he has at home. It is a small, secure location where he can calm down and relax without having to focus on any stimuli coming from the rest of the car or the environment. He has nothing to destroy, since everything chewable is out of reach. Plus, in the event of a car accident, he is protected on all sides. A crate helps solve any issue caused by keeping a dog loose in the car! While your dog should be able to stand and turn around comfortably in his crate at home, we want a smaller size for travel. Since he’ll be in a moving vehicle, it’s safest if he isn’t up and moving around. You don’t want him thrown around in an accident either, so he is more closely protected with a smaller space. Traveling in a crate allows you ease of mind that your dog will have a safe, comfortable journey and you can focus on the fun you’re out to find!
